Communication Addressing Poverty
Communication Addressing Poverty
The Communication Addressing Poverty (CAP) Lab is committed to enhancing research on poverty in the field of communication. To do this, we conduct critical research by meeting citizens where they are. We also help scholars and practitioners find ways to work together, adapt, and expand their work to address issues related to poverty. Last, we advocate on behalf of citizens and communities by collaborating with stakeholders to promote equitable futures.
Cap Lab’s interdisciplinary epistemological approach is rooted in the belief that complex problems must be solved collectively. As firm believers in the democratization of knowledge production, we support equitable partnerships with practitioners outside of the academy. Using this model, practitioners have the opportunity to participate in every aspect of the research, from design and data collection to interpretation of the results and their implications. Likewise, we acknowledge and credit their contributions in the finished work. This model creates a situation where people whose communities are most affected by our work can have a voice in their futures and help keep academic research relevant and useful in real-world contexts.

Cap Lab’s methodological orientation is rooted in the imperative that citizens be given the space to speak for themselves and their communities. For this reason, we encourage participatory action research and scholarship that publishes what participants have to say in their own words.
“You tell the story from the top down; you’ll never get to the root of it...you’ll never get to the truth.”
-Keith Moore, citizen partner
Cap Lab’s teaching and research efforts aim to enhance understanding of the intersection between poverty-related issues and communication research. Cap Lab conducts workshops and seminars to help scholars adapt and expand their work to include understudied populations. Cap Lab' also helps scholars circumvent defining people by their problems when addressing inequality so that communities can be met with dignity in the field and in scholarship.

Cap Lab’s community engagement aims to strengthen communities by lending its time, expertise, and resources to amplify communities’ concerns, address communities’ critical needs, and solve multi-stakeholder conflicts at the ground level.
Cap Lab’s collective space policy is rooted in the belief that the project for equitable democratic inclusion starts at ground zero. It promotes an inclusive environment that acknowledges the dignity and belonging of all collaborators.
